Overview

What started as a personal quest to become a better partner – someone who truly shows up and connects deeply – turned into something that could help couples everywhere strengthen their bonds.

I’ve always believed that the best relationships aren’t built on assumptions, but on genuine understanding of each other’s unique quirks, love languages, and hidden superpowers.

This philosophy sparked the creation of Bondi.

Execution

Problem

Most relationship advice feels generic – broad suggestions that barely scratch the surface of what makes each couple unique. Meanwhile, existing relationship tools either oversimplify with basic compatibility quizzes or overwhelm with clinical assessments that feel more like homework than discovery.

Couples want to understand each other better and grow together, but they lack engaging, personalized tools that reveal meaningful insights about their specific dynamic. The challenge isn’t just creating another quiz – it’s generating truly personalized, actionable insights that feel both fun and profound.

Initial hypothesis

People in relationships have a natural desire to deepen their connection and seek external validation of their bond, but they’re underserved by current tools that offer either surface-level entertainment or overly academic approaches.

There’s an opportunity to create something that bridges this gap – a beautifully designed experience that combines the engagement of a fun quiz with the depth of AI-powered personalization, delivering insights that couples actually want to discuss and act upon.

Building the MVP

Product & Experience Design

Rather than creating a one-size-fits-all quiz, I designed five distinct relationship tests tailored to specific stages: Early Dating, Newly Engaged, Marriage Journey, Long Distance, and Relationship Reset. Each test addresses the unique dynamics and challenges couples face at that particular moment in their journey.

This stage-specific approach allowed for much more targeted marketing and personalized experiences. A newly engaged couple has completely different concerns than a long-distance relationship, so their tests explore different dynamics while maintaining the same core framework.

The core experience centers around a magic link system where Person A completes their test, pays, and shares a unique link with their partner. Only after both complete their sections do they unlock their personalized results together. Each test blends multiple proven frameworks – love languages, relationship dynamics, and mutual understanding assessments – all wrapped in a conversational, playful tone.

Working with a friend Serge on UI design, we crafted an experience that feels premium and intimate, using warm colors, thoughtful animations, and imagery that celebrates connection rather than clinical assessment.

Technical Implementation

I built Bondi as a full-stack TypeScript application, choosing a lightweight but scalable tech stack perfect for rapid MVP development:

  • Frontend: Next.js with React and Tailwind CSS for a responsive web experience that works seamlessly on both mobile and desktop
  • Backend: Firebase for authentication, database, and cloud functions
  • AI Integration: OpenAI API for generating personalized relationship insights
  • Payments: Stripe for secure transaction processing
  • Architecture: Server-side rendering with API routes, ensuring fast load times and SEO optimization

The magic link system required careful session management and security considerations. Each link is single-use, transforms based on completion status, and maintains data integrity throughout the partner-sharing flow.

Acquisition Funnel

Bondi’s growth strategy leverages multiple channels to reach couples at different relationship stages:

  • Organic SEO: Content-driven approach targeting relationship advice and compatibility keywords
  • Paid Advertising: Targeted Google and social media campaigns focused on relationship milestone moments
  • Content Marketing: Blog posts addressing common relationship questions and dynamics
  • Viral Mechanics: Built-in sharing features encourage users to post results on social media
  • Internal Referrals: Word-of-mouth growth from satisfied couples sharing their experience

The key insight was targeting specific relationship stages with tailored messaging that speaks to each group’s unique concerns and aspirations. This segmentation proved crucial for both product development and marketing effectiveness.

Outcomes

Building Bondi part-time over six months (January-June 2025) while working evenings and weekends proved that focused execution can deliver meaningful results. Since launch, as of August 2025 we’ve served 150 paying customers who’ve discovered new dimensions of their relationships through AI-powered insights.

The platform has validated that couples are hungry for personalized, actionable relationship tools that go beyond generic advice. Users consistently report that their results sparked meaningful conversations and gave them specific ways to strengthen their connection.

Most importantly, Bondi has shown that technology can enhance intimacy rather than distract from it, creating moments of discovery and understanding that bring couples closer together.
