Problem

As the global pandemic unfolded, numerous parents found themselves at home with their children, who had transitioned to online education.

Unprepared for the challenges of juggling work, household chores, and assisting their young children with online learning, parents were in dire need of support.

Research

I joined the startup as a Product Manager in May 2020, just a few months after COVID-19 impacted North America. Collaborating closely with the founders, we began exploring opportunities to assist parents and children during these unparalleled times, as families adapted to working, studying, and living remotely within the confines of their homes.

Family Persona

Through in-depth conversations with dozens of parents, it became clear that the most pressing issue they faced during the pandemic was managing their elementary school children’s education without letting anything fall through the cracks.

The shift to remote learning significantly increased the effort required from parents to help their children stay focused on studying, complete homework, and follow up on assignments.

Market Research

I conducted extensive market research to identify key educational LMS systems that we could potentially integrate with. We ultimately selected Google Classroom as the fastest-growing, free LMS with several available APIs that catered to our requirements.

Hypothesis

The comprehensive market research, coupled with valuable insights from numerous parent interviews, led us to formulate the following hypothesis:

By offering increased visibility into assignments, announcements, and comments in the online classroom, we can support parents in staying on top of their children’s online learning.

Validating this hypothesis became the central focus of our subsequent endeavors for the business.

Userflows & Data models

The subsequent phase in my process involved the development of multiple user flows, prioritizing both parent-first and child-first journey initiations.

These user flows were designed to foster team alignment on the proposed solution, ensuring a cohesive understanding of the project’s direction.

Moreover, I crafted essential data models to further bridge the gap between the business and engineering teams, fostering a collaborative environment.

These data models played a pivotal role in shaping the overall architectural approach, paving the way for a robust and well-structured system tailored to the needs of all stakeholders.”

Wireframes

Once the leadership and engineering teams collaboratively established a unified approach, I developed comprehensive wireframes that encompassed the end-to-end user journeys for both parents and children. These wireframes were designed to facilitate seamless user experiences, taking into account the unique needs and expectations of each user group.

Subsequently, I’ve used the UserTesting platform to evaluate these wireframes, enabling us to gather invaluable insights and feedback from parents prior to committing resources to the development of high-fidelity mockups and code implementation.

This strategic approach ensured that our design decisions were well-informed and user-centric, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience and satisfaction.

Mockups

As we became more assured in the insights obtained through the validation of our wireframes on UserTesting, I played a supportive role in the design process by contributing to the development of high-fidelity mockups.

These detailed visual representations were then embraced and adeptly implemented by our proficient engineering team, transforming our carefully researched concepts into a practical and functional web app.

Outcomes

Consequently, Eddy Learning has played an important role in supporting over 5,000 U.S. parents as they navigated their elementary school children’s education during the global pandemic. In collaboration with the leadership team, we have successfully validated several key hypotheses and gained profound insights into the parent-child dynamic.

As children gradually returned to in-person schooling, the demand for remote learning support tools began to wane. The leadership team, recognizing the evolving landscape, made the strategic decision to pivot. They harnessed the valuable knowledge and expertise acquired from Eddy Learning to explore new horizons in the edtech space, emphasizing innovative solutions for lifelong learning and comprehensive skill development.
